How to research specific items

I've started a new game with the intent of creating an aerospace company but all the tech is locked (specifically airplanes). Is there a way to research specific items? I've built a few factories for parts but they don't have the tech, I cant buy it from someone else either. I've started in 2000 and after 26 years of random research I dont have planes yet.
