Freight/Transport DLC

Post by abuz »

There should be Transport?Freight DLC, where we can make shipping company. Every product have freight cost involved from Faring to Warehouse to Retail. One could capitalize in Freight.

Hi,

i was thinking the same thing! In my head it's called "Logistics DLC" and may include every type of transportation, but also - packaging upgrades, moving between cities, post offices, bus services, taxi services, rental cars services. In the game we already have supply chains - mines-farms-factories-other factories-retail. Parking lots will be good new buildings. Online delivery firms like Amazon can also be included here.

Just share your ideas!

Logistics DLC Ideas

Overview:
A firm transports any goods to another firm. The game now just has a freight amount calculated and the goods are instantly there. It does not matter the actual distance between the two firms, they arrive next day. A dimension can be added that allows for the goods to be in transit, as opposed to instantly arriving.

How It Works:
The firm buying the goods needs to select freight options. The freight options the buying firm chooses will depend on the value of the items being bought and the estimated demand it has for it. If you are selling leather wallets like crazy, you will be likely to select the fastest possible shipping method. Conversely, if this is a new product launch and you are unsure how the demand will be, you may select the cheapest.

Freight Types:
Generically, there are three freight types: ground, air, sea. The airport and seaport buildings are already in the game, just no real interaction with them. For ground, a new building called "Shipping Depot" would need to be added.

Shipping Within the City
Air is expensive but can get products moved the next day. Sea is the middle cost option and products arrive in two days. Ground is the cheapest and take 3 days.

Shipping Between Cities
Apply a multiplier to the time in days defined in shipping within the city.

Fleets
Companies can now be a freight carrier - air, ground or sea, or all three. Each item will have a fleet list (list of planes, ships, trucks) that will need to be bought, maintained and eventually replaced once their useful life is over. A ship can carry a ton of product compared to a truck so the ship will have a larger capacity compared to the truck but be vastly more expensive to buy.

This could tie in to my REIT Real Estate idea where a company can build/purchase the assets and the shipping company just leases them.

Freight Prices:
The freight charged would be based on type (air, sea, ground), distance, weight of item being shipping or cubic foot item takes up (either metric would work), priority (types are RUSH->halves delivery time or standard), capacity remaining for shipper (if their fleet is fully utilized, they will charge more).

From a game play point of view, if the shipper utilization ever gets to 100%, the assumption is they will outsource it to a third party. This prevents products from not being shipped at all. The price the shipper charges should be raised accordingly, however.

A company can build a seaport, airport or shipping depot and then start sending items. Local competitors can be utilized, like in media firms, to allow a shipping firm to make money without any companies using them.

Final Thoughts:
The real objective I wanted to achieve is to prevent the instant arrival of goods. I think some sort of delay would provide for more planning.

Thank you.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I would recommend that you create a poll for your suggestion to gauge the community's interest in it. There would be a higher chance that the dev team will implement it if the interest level is high.

You could see some examples of the polls in the Suggestions forum at http://www.capitalism2.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=14
