Are there any benefits to the player or only to the city?

I'm wondering if there is any benefit to donating money to the university to boost competitive rating for my product line.

Are you asking if donating money to university for certain product line bring benefit to player?
Yes,
for the player --> it will boost the R&D Tech Advancement.
For example,
-Product: Bread - Food City competitiveness Rating: 89.95 -R&D Duration: 6 months -Expected Tech Advancement: 19
-Product: Car - Automobile City competitiveness Rating: 0 -R&D Duration: 6 months -Expected Tech Advancement: 4

I haven't figured out other benefit yet.

The City's Volume of Export of the industry
There will be export when the city's competitiveness rating exceeds the global competitiveness rating. Strong export will improve the city's employment significantly.
